ADAPTIVE REUSE: HOSPITALITY PROJECT
Project description
Site: Canopy by Hilton Minneapolis Mill District, 708 Third Street South, Minneapolis, MN 55415
This project requires the designer to design and reuse a historical building, which is the former Advance Thresher Company, AKA Thresher Square. It is located east of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The building is previously converted from technical industrial to office use, and now it is further transformed into a hotel function. The designer will design a retail and hospitality design solution for the tenant of the hotel/cocktail bar, which is located in the historical building of Downtown East Minneapolis. The designer will be free to identify the tenant in the design asset and decide who will use the space more frequently.
Concept - Flourishing
1. Grow/develop in a healthy and vigorous way.
2. Somebody or something around to attract the attention of others.
The space is designed to show atmospheres of welcoming, lively, and healthy to customers. The interior space adapts the original heavy timber and brick structures in the building to corporate the design style of the canopy hotel in order to maintain the cultural heritage of the building itself. The space also will use local materials as the interior details and decorative elements in order to show the character of diversity. The interior color scheme will be mainly green and neutral colors, so as to form a depiction of the local nature and also have a mental therapeutic effect for the customer. The signature asset in the space will be designed by using a new technology that creates a new immersive experience for customers by recalling the surrounding scenery in order to help customers feel the prosperity of the Mill District and let the restaurant be more competitive.
